An unexpected coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth’s magnetic field last night and caused a G1 (minor) geomagnetic storm, which then intensified to a G2 (moderate) storm. The CME was likely fired into space after a filament eruption on September 8–9, and eventually collided with Earth on September 12 to trigger the G2 (Kp=6) storm threshold at 17:59 UTC.
