Dario Amodei warns of uncontrolled development of AI

The headline may have come as a surprise to some, but probably less so to others:

“Billionaire Anthropic CEO Urges Competitors to Slow Down AI Development.”

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, warns that uncontrolled AI development could eventually lead to AI escaping human control—potentially even through swarms of autonomous AI programs taking over the global internet. And this could happen as early as next year.

It increasingly looks as though reality is about to catch up with science fiction — or even overtake it.

My novel “The Superflare” also features an AI that escapes human control and ultimately overthrows its creators.

Amodei’s warning, however, assumes that the major AI companies still have control over the development of the technology — and that they can actually slow it down. I find that increasingly questionable. Even if the leading companies were to agree on a slower pace of development, they have no control over what is happening elsewhere — for example, in China or Russia.

In the end, we may have no choice but to watch what happens and intervene as soon as something goes wrong.

Hoping that, by then, we can still act in time.
